Are you There? It's Me, the Vagina.

I've discovered that the suckiest part of being pregnant is not the traumatizing stories or dangerous old wives tales strangers, friends, and family alike are suddenly compelled to share and insist you repeat. It's not even the people making eye contact with only your belly or boobs and grabbing your belly out of nowhere. Heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, Braxton Hicks, and cervical pain are all a piece of cake. It's the part where you are gradually belittled and pushed aside to no more than a mere vagina. Just a body part waiting to carry out one function.

You're not a woman anymore, you're not even a person in general. All you are is the obstacle between everyone out there and a baby's face. From my experience within my own family, all anyone cares about is what color the baby is (I kid you not - a huge factor in my family), whether he or she is pretty or ugly, and who he or she looks like. As soon as they've pushed their way through to get a good, long, scrutinizing look, they take off, never to be heard from again, only to push their faces in to take a look and make comments and poke around that very same baby when he or she starts going through puberty, and again when they become of marrying age. I've kept my distance from my family for these reasons, but with my due date getting closer, the only way to avoid people now would be to hide under a rock in the middle of Antartica.

Now, people are making my hormones cry me to sleep at night. It's my fault the baby hasn't gained enough weight. It's my fault the baby is moving as much as he/she is. It's my fault the baby might come early. It's my fault my blood count is as low as it is. It's my fault I haven't gained as much weight during the pregnancy. It's my fault I had the flu and the cold. It's my fault the hospital bags took so long to organize. It's my fault the house isn't cleaned and rearranged already. It's my fault the baby room isn't finished.

Wanting a gender neutral green & white theme is stupid and people will buy blue/pink based on what shape my belly is, and the baby BETTER be the gender they're buying for. It doesn't matter what I want, only what they want and they're telling me it will be a boy/girl, just wait and see. If it's a girl, I better look for bright pink and cute princess dresses because that's what all girls are supposed to wear whether I want to shove that old fashioned concept down my child's throat or not. If it's a boy, I better make sure everything he has is blue and screams "BOY" because that's what you're supposed to do with boys, whether I want to follow that stereotypical notion or not. It doesn't matter what I feel, what I think, or what I want. I am not important in any of these decisions, nor should I expect to have any kind of say whatsoever.

I should not breastfeed my baby at night, only during the day, and the baby should be bottle-fed formula at night only by my husband, not me. Cleaning, cooking, washing, and taking care of the baby are all solely my responsibilities and the only help I should ask for/accept is with regards to traditional old wives tales of "rubbing the uterus back in place" even if I don't want any more strangers near my lady parts, and "oiling down" the baby. I should get rid of the things I actually do have ready for the baby that doesn't meet the approval of one or two particular people, and use nothing until they can get the products they insist I use. The only things that are necessary for the baby are things that were used by other moms 20-30 years ago and anything more is just being obnoxious.

It doesn't matter what the hospital, doctor, nurses, or clinic staff say, if this person says I should use a 30 year old product instead of following modern day medical advice, that's exactly what I should do, no exceptions. If I know I have severe side effects from a certain medication that leads to me being hospitalized, I should still take it because someone can get it for cheap over the counter in another country. If someone has offered to buy a book/toy/article of clothing for the baby and asks for my input, I should not mention that I would like to follow a gender neutral (GREEN AND MOTHERFUCKING WHITE PEOPLE. IS THAT SO MOTHERFUCKING HARD TO UNDERSTAND? "Excuse me ma'am/sir, can I help you?" "Oh yes please, I'm looking for something gender neutral, green and white preferably, can you show me what selections you have available?/I was looking at this actually, do you have it available in green and/or white?" "Why yes, come right this way/No, I'm sorry, you'll have to check another store." "THANK YOU" End of fucking story. WILL THAT FUCKING KILL SOMEONE???? WILL IT MOTHERFUCKING KILL THEM?!?!?!!?!) theme or have a preference of certain things over another. I should understand that I have no say in any of the decisions being made about myself or my the baby, and things like colors aren't big deals anyway, but I should be very understanding of how important those things are to every one else out there, like the people going on about how it BETTER be a boy because they bought all blue or it BETTER be a girl because they bought all pink.

Why am I keeping the baby from being born? Why am I hurrying the baby to be born? Why don't I make the baby put on more weight? Why don't I use *insert old wives tale here* instead of *insert sound modern day medical advice/common sense here*?

It goes on, trust me. It might not seem like a big deal; I've tried to talk to one or two people about it and they certainly don't think it is, but for a young mom-to-be trying to figure out how to be a good mother with no example to follow and figure out how to provide the best she can for her baby, all of these opinions/orders don't make things any easier. How are you supposed to have any kind of mother/child relationship with so many hands twisting you this way and that and demanding that you follow so many orders? Whatever happened to motherhood being a beautiful thing? Or the mother/child relationship being a sacred/special one? Isn't breastfeeding my decision and kind of up to the baby and my milk supply more than the orders from someone else miles away? Don't I as a parent get to decide whether or not I want to swaddle my baby or rock him/her to sleep? Can't I decide whether or not I want to bathe my baby in a bucket/bowl or a baby bathtub? Can't I make decisions about diapering my baby, or wait to see how cloth diapering works out, or what kind of disposable diaper works with the baby before getting stocks of a certain kind of disposable diaper? Can't I plan for teething rings, play mats, and toys when the baby reaches those stages if I have no say in anything else at the very least? Can't I decide on who I am and am not comfortable informing about my cervical information, labor information, and see first when the baby is born?

What irks me more than anything is knowing that I always keep my head down and take things like this very quietly. I don't make a fuss, I don't argue, I don't stand up for myself period. I say nothing out loud and everything in my head. I always look for the lower, more respectful road. That stupid road gets me HERE. Fighting back tears for the fourth time today alone. The people that curse and scream and lie and cheat and steal? They're all living the high life, doing as they please, and they know damned well nobody can dare come near them and breathe anything remotely close to "you better", "you should", or "you have to". THEY are bowed down to and welcomed everywhere they go with open arms, revered as kings and queens of their time. Me? I'm just a vagina pushing out a kid people want to see.

However, even if I am just a vagina, I think what I'm about to do, you know, the whole bringing a baby into the world thing? Yeah, that. I think it's still pretty important. I think that not just anyone can pull that off and I'm pretty special for it. Look at a penis. Or a boob. Or an elbow. Think they can handle the pressure? No. That's why it's my job. I might be bruised and swollen and sore afterwards, but I'm the one who handles this job. Even if nobody else realizes it. Even if all the fingers and toes and nose hairs give themselves a parade afterwards. They might hide me away under a hospital gown, but I'll know what I accomplished. One day, all us vaginas will unite and show 'em all who's boss. Until then, very, very quiet rounds of applause for us all. *quietly cheers*

Hospital and Baby Checklists

Remember the lists I was talking about in the last post? I'm going to expose them to the world now *muahahahahahaha* and possibly humiliate myself in the process as I admit my honest thoughts about everything on those lists and what little I actually have checked off. Nevertheless, there might be a fellow clueless parent-to-be freaking out and bordering on the run-through-the-streets-screaming-about-the-end-of-the-world stage of insanity that might find this post helpful. I intend to go through these lists now, before Superbaby comes as a soon-to-be first time mom, and again after Superbaby comes as an actual mom with an actual baby, so I can honestly give you guys my two cents about what was and wasn't necessary. I have rewritten these lists in my diary for quick and easy access on the road, while visiting Taurus Man's family people and asking questions, while checking out baby and maternity stores, etc. I will be typing these lists word for word from my diary, with all my edits and notes included.

KEY:
highlight = checked off i.e. I have this ready
strikethrough = crossed off my list i.e. I don't think it's necessary
red font = unchecked i.e. I still have to get this ready/this is on my shopping list

First, let's start off with the hospital bags.

MY HOSPITAL BAG
  • 4 cotton nightgowns (button down front)
  • 2 cotton dusters
  • 2 packs maternity pads
  • 2 towels
  • 4 washrags
  • toiletries (soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush)
  • slippers
  • comb/brush
  • cooling lotion - limacol/alcolado (if desired)
  • 1 Fleet enema (red & white box)

EXTENDED HOSPITAL BAG LIST (FOR ME)
  • bathrobe
  • nursing bra
  • socks
  • change of clothes for home (maxi dress, underwear, sweater)
  • cotton roll
  • Savlon
  • rubbing alcohol
  • phone/camera & charger/batteries
  • shaver
  • chapstick
  • hair tie
  • face wash & make-up

Though nightgowns are highlighted as something I have ready, I personally chose to go with 2 nightgowns instead of four, as I don't normally wear nightgowns, and providing I can still comfortably wear pants after giving birth, will most likely give up the nightgowns shortly after coming home. The nightgowns I bought were the cheapest I could find for those reasons and are indeed cotton. One of them buttons down to the waist, and the other buttons straight down.

I have crossed dusters off the list because I honestly don't think I'll need it. One of my people over at the Phenomenal page suggested wearing a nightgown as a robe over another, and I can definitely do that with the nightgown that buttons straight down if need be. I intend to carry a sweater or jacket to change into when I leave the hospital, so I will also have that for warmth.

When I go shopping next week I'll get those items in red to have my bags 100% ready. I intend on buying just one pack of maternity pads to start off with though, for the reasons I stated in the last post.

I will carry just one towel instead of two, and as per the reasons in the last post, I may not even use it. For the same reasons, instead of 4 washcloths, I will be bringing one thick, long face towel.

In terms of toiletries, throughout this pregnancy I've kept one deodorant in the bathroom, one in the bedroom, and one in my purse. I will definitely be taking one of those with me, as well as a bar of soap, my toothbrush, and my toothpaste (Taurus Man and I use different toothpastes) in individual baggies.

I wear slippers to go just about everywhere now, as it's easier to just slip off when my feet start to hurt or get too hot. As my go-to choice of footwear nowadays, I'll be wearing slippers to go to the hospital anyway, and won't need to pack it as an extra item. Yay!

To be completely honest, I don't comb my hair regularly. I can't even tell you exactly when the last time I spent any time at all on my hair was. Personally, there's no need for me to pack a comb/brush for the hospital if I rarely use it anyway.

For those of you in the states, Bay Rum also classifies as cooling lotion. I use Limacol down here for migraines on occasion, so I already have a half empty bottle on hand. I'm not sure how exactly this will be used in the hospital, but it won't hurt to throw it in.

As I said in the last post, once you're going with a public hospital, you have to supply everything. Enemas are part of the protocol down here and you have to buy it whether you want it or not. You have no say in the matter.

Taurus girl was given a checklist of things to have ready for her baby by her colleagues, and after making her own edits and whatnot, sent it to me. She included a hospital bag list for her private nursing home. I've added the things the public hospital didn't include in their list under a separate "extended" list as you can see up there. I plan on including what I think is necessary just in case.

I crossed off the bathrobe for the same reason I crossed off the dusters. All of my pre-pregnancy bras are so tight I can barely breathe in them, so I definitely plan on buying some nursing bras soon as I'd ideally like to exclusively breastfeed. If I get the nursing bras in time, I'll throw one in my bag just in case, but I'm not focusing on it as a mandatory item. I'll keep a pair of socks in the bag as well in case it gets cold at night (the hospital is not air conditioned, and the windows in the wards are usually left open for ventilation).

My change of clothes to go home in will be one of the summer dresses my MIL sent for me last month, a jacket or cardigan, a bra, and a pair of giant underwear to accommodate any soreness as well as the maternity pad. The summer dress still fits my 9 month belly and will definitely still fit regardless of how much or little of the belly I lose after giving birth.

I'm not sure what the cotton roll or Savlon is for, but I will get it next time I go shopping just in case. Taurus Girl says the Savlon is used after coming home, in something similar to a sitz bath where you sit over the steam as hot as you can take it, not in the water itself. I've never even heard of Savlon before now, but I'll find out pretty soon! Taurus Girl said there was no need for rubbing alcohol in the hospital or at home, so I crossed that off right away.

Taurus Man and I don't have a camera, but my phone has one, so I'll be packing my phone and charger with me for calls and pictures. I've heard ( as in "word on the street is...") that your lady parts need to be shaved when you go in to give birth, and if the nurses in the public hospital down here have to shave you, they get very rough when things aren't ready. I'm not sure how true that is, as my OB-GYN said nothing of the loch ness pregnancy monster I'm harboring down below or mentioned anything about shaving. Just in case, I've been trying to recruit Taurus Man to help me, so hopefully I'll be ready and waiting with just a little dignity left in case it is mandatory. Once the deed is done, I see no need to carry the shaver.

I've always had a problem with chapped, bleeding lips, so there will definitely be blistex or some kind of lip moisturizer in my bag. I keep my hair tied almost 24/7 now to deal with the heat, and once my hair tie is off my hair, it's on my wrist, so that won't be a problem either.

I hardly even use any kind of skin care regiment, and I've actually finished the products I keep on hand and can't find replacements anywhere I've checked in this country so far. It's not a mandatory item for me, and ditto for make-up. I don't intend to have visitors in the hospital aside from Taurus Man anyway, only a select few people will actually know when I go into labor, and just a couple more people will be informed when the baby is born. I'll definitely have time to swipe on some lip balm and maybe eyeliner when I get home and settle in with the baby if visitors want to come then.

BABY'S HOSPITAL BAG

  • 3 nighties
  • 3 casacks
  • 3 vests
  • 10 disposable diapers
  • 2 pairs of socks/booties
  • 2 blankets
  • 1 bonnet
  • bottle of methylated spirits
  • jar of petroleum jelly
  • baby soap
  • wet wipes
  • 2 towels
  • 2 wash rags
  • 2 baby hats
I'm only just learning that there are nightgowns and something called "casacks" for babies, because of this list.  I'm still not entirely sure what either of those things are, but I've been told by everyone I've asked that people in the baby stores will definitely know, so once I go shopping and see for myself what this stuff is, I can further enlighten you. :)

I have 2 pairs of socks, blankets, and wash rags set aside with no problem. I had a barely used jar of petroleum jelly lying around, so I threw that in the baby bag as well. However, instead of two towels I'm just bringing one as I've been told that the public hospitals don't bathe babies and since I'm only supposed to be there for 24 hours and I just have two towels for the baby so far, I see no harm in keeping one [clean] on hand for when I get home. Seeing as I'm bringing two baby hats, I don't understand why I would need a bonnet, so I've taken the liberty of ignoring that.

Although the hospital list plainly says "soap", I've decided to get baby soap, or a head-to-toe baby wash instead. Seeing as how this is Trinidad, they probably really expect me to walk with a bar of regular soap, but seeing as how the baby's skin will be so sensitive anyway, and there's a chance that my super freaky sensitive skin could be passed down as well, I say my baby gets some kind of hypoallergenic baby wash for sensitive skin, not an actual bar of soap. So there :P

Taurus Man and I bought a nice tub of wipes last week, and also got three refill packs sent down from my mom and brothers, so we're cool on wipes, but we'll be buying one of those small, portable cases to take to the hospital and keep in the baby bag for future reference, so even though we have stocks of wipes, I'm leaving it unchecked until we buy the little case next week.

**Quick note: I think it goes without saying, but I just want to mention that all the things I'll be buying will be hypoallergenic and for sensitive skin. That's what I look for on the rare occasion I need to buy a bottle of cream or some kind of make-up for myself, and it's what I personally feel better using on the baby for the reasons listed above. Different people go for different things, and that's what I'm cool with. Just so you know :)

Since I'm walking with just the bare minimum for the hospital and squeezing back where I can, what if there's an emergency and I actually need all that stuff? Ahhh, I thought of that too. :D I made an emergency bag checklist that Taurus Man will keep with him in the car (he plans to camp out in the parking lot until I'm discharged. Isn't he the sweetest?). In the event that I do need anything extra, he can just waltz in like "Pardon me bitches, but my smokin' hot wife is in labor and she needs this right now. Step aside, yo." Of course he's not going to actually say that, but you get the gist.

EMERGENCY BAG/EXTRA ITEMS

  • blanket for me
  • dress to deliver in and big old underwear
  • garbage bag & old towel for car
  • cereal bars/poptarts/cinnamon raisin bread
  • bottled water
  • extra nightgown
  • bathrobe
  • extra towel
  • 4 washrags
  • blanket for baby
  • newborn sleeper gown
  • extra baby towel
  • extra baby hat and pair of socks
  • medical documents, hospital card, clinic paper, ob-gyn pregnancy record, etc.
  • 10 extra diapers
  • list of specific people (w/ info) to call when labor starts and after the baby is born, respectively

I think that should cover everything for the hospital. Although I have everything in the emergency bag checked off, I just have to actually pack the bag. Just a quick run through the list:

When Taurus Man was hospitalized in this very hospital for his heart attack, the thin hospital blanket was not enough to keep him warm and his feet actually went numb from the coldness at night. Luckily, one of the nurses was nice enough to sneak him an extra blanket. In case I don't have a super nice nurse, I'll bring my own blanket as backup.

Labor can happen at anytime and go in any direction, whether I have time to take a shower and change at home or we're speeding down the highway soaked in amniotic fluid, this emergency bag will go with me everywhere, so as long as I have a couple minutes to change into an old dress and underwear I don't mind getting dirty/potentially ruined for life, it's just a matter of a quick grab and go.

For the same reason, I intend to spread a garbage bag on my seat, followed by an old towel, so if there are any stains or messes on the way to the hospital, the car will be saved such a devastating blow. The cereal bars and other snacks are for both myself and Taurus Man. I don't know what Taurus Man intends to eat while he's camped out in the parking lot as I've left it up to him to pack what he needs for himself, but in the event that he's left with no options, he'll at least have those quick fixes to turn to. When he was hospitalized, he was admitted in the morning and was not given food until the next morning. I'm hungry every hour and a half and I'm guessing labor will use up all of my energy and resources, so unless I'm given a medical reason as to why I can't eat after at least after I have the baby, I want food dammit. Until I get food, I have my own stock of snacks to turn to in the hospital, as well as on the way home.

Taurus Man had nothing to drink the entire week he was in the hospital and I brought big liters of bottled water for him every day. I'm constantly thirsty, so again, unless I'm given a medical reason as to why I can't keep myself hydrated with water, I'll have my own water to drink since the hospital doesn't give you any. (Also as a back-up in case Taurus Man forgets to bring something for himself to drink)

I have an extra nightgown that my mom and brothers sent for me, so I'll be packing that and my old bathrobe in the event that the two nightgowns aren't enough. I also think if it's cold enough for me to actually need a duster, my old robe can definitely do the job. I'll also bring the extra towel and 4 washcloths for myself from the list in case they actually do need it for something. Same goes for the extra baby blanket and towel. In case the baby's clothes get dirty or there's any emergency there, I'll have the sleeper gown, hats, socks, and diapers to pull us out of any jam in addition to the stuff in the baby's hospital bag, which I think is excessive as it is.

I'll keep all my relevant medical documents in the emergency bag, rather than in either my bag or the baby's bag so Taurus Man can easily access it and handle that aspect of things if I'm too distracted by pain or my big toe to focus.

Also, I keep to myself when it comes to family and instead of a million acquaintances, I just have a few friends who have stuck around through the years. I'm doing a long-distance Blessingsway with a handful of people who have been there for me and so far, plan to call only those involved when I go into labor. After I actually give birth, there are a few select people Taurus Man and I have agreed to inform, and whoever finds out after that, will find out however they find out. I tried to reach out to everyone I knew for years on end, again when I got married, and again when I found out I was pregnant, and the feedback has been very dead-ish. I'm sure I've said this countless times in other posts, but I'm done trying to make everyone feel good and make other people a priority when I'm clearly nowhere close to the same in their lives. I appreciate the people who have been there for me and try my best to respect and treasure them they way I feel they do for me, but as selfish as I may sound, I couldn't care less for the people that pretend I don't exist for years on end and show up just to judge, lecture, and/or condemn me because I won't give up who I am to blindly follow whatever crowd they happen to think is right at the time. I'm no longer the girl that preaches "treat them the way you want them to treat you" and "shower them with kindness until they open their eyes". Uhhhhhh, NO. So far, that has never worked for me, and I only end up getting hurt and having more trust issues in the end. Rather than run around crying and yelling in everyone's faces begging them to be nice, I think it works out better for me to keep to myself and let them all keep on just keeping on.*end of rant* Now, I won't concern myself with anything but taking care of myself and the baby (and Taurus Man when I can spare some sanity and time lol) and I think that's totally understandable.

This is the basic rundown of the list of baby things I got from Taurus Girl after edits by her, myself, and then us both together. This is supposed to be a basic guide to help you figure out what you need for a new baby. You'll see what I honestly have and don't have ready and all that goodness *prepares to be embarrassed*. Of course, like I said, I intend to do a 'before' and 'after', where after the baby I'll give you feedback on what I actually needed/used and whatnot (and will hopefully have most of this ready!).

That's everything so far, though I do intend to make edits once the baby comes and I see how handy the list really came. Also, I'd like to make a practical checklist for the baby bag, not in terms of packing for the hospital, but in terms of using it for the baby on a regular basis when we go out etc. We'll see how it goes. Yes, yes, I know, that's a whole lot of red/things that aren't ready. I don't think everything on the list is actually as necessary as Taurus Girl and her colleagues have said, but hopefully Taurus Man & I can organize the majority of these things in time and see for ourselves. There will also be a list of all the things I actually do have ready and what my honest reviews are on each and every item, but that will be after I get more things ready, and most likely after the baby comes. Stay tuned! :)

Popped Bubble Wrap

*Note: I typed this out on Thursday and had to wait until I had internet again, and then until it was actually working to copy and paste and publish this post. Stupid, stupid, STUPID country and everything in it.

Anyone that has been following this blog and/or the one I had prior to this one will know that a lot crappy things have happened to me. As a matter of fact, I attract crappy things like a crap attracting magnet. Despite all the whatevers that have been going on, I have been trying, desperately I’ll admit, to be as positive and calm and cheerful and relaxed as I possibly can. If not for the baby or Taurus Man or my furballs, then to keep the pieces of my sanity floating around until some kind of miracle happens so that when I tell people “I’m fine” I’ll actually be able to mean it.

Today, however, is one of those days. The kind of day that makes you want to sit on the floor, throw your hands up in the air and say “I give up. What now?” Yeah, I should try harder to keep a smile on my face and make everyone comfortable and try to be more of a positive influence and less of a party pooper. There are a lot of things I should be doing. But the invisible bubble wrap I’ve wrapped myself in to keep the bad feelings out? All my bubbles are officially popped, and it’s not so much fun sitting in popped bubble wrap. (If you don’t get that I mean that figuratively….well….just know that I mean that figuratively)

Kitty’s death has finally soaked in. My due date is that much closer. My suspicions of the crappy hospital protocols I’ll be subjected to in this country have been confirmed. The options I thought I might have available to me have been shunned. The liberties I hoped I would have until then are gone. Taurus Man is getting more and more insistent on putting Hyper Doggy in the garage and giving away the kittens. There are more and more things piling up on my plate and I have less and less time to deal with these things and work them out. All those things on my plate? My plate got too heavy and today I dropped it. I cracked under the pressure. I fell and hit the ground hard. And I looked around to find myself in a dark little room, alone.

There is ONE person in my family that still has my back and has welcomed Taurus Man as my husband and always treated me with kindness and consideration. She is the only person that regularly checks up on me, albeit online, and shows any care or concern even while tending to her own family. She is the only person that has offered to help me with the baby after delivery. I know I will most likely need help. If Taurus Man is hopefully working by then, it will be me, by myself, to tend to all the household chores, take care of the baby, myself, and deal with Cancer Grump’s crap. With my history, I’m worried about post-partum depression being an issue as well. I would like to take up this family member very much on her offer, but Cancer Grump’s track record doesn’t read too nicely. He bullies Taurus Man and I on a regular basis. I had one of Taurus Man’s friend’s wives come over earlier in the year to help me cook for a prayer service when I was unwell. Cancer Grump insulted her and tossed offensive comments about her religion and cooking style around and tried to start a fight with the priest/pundit and quarreled and complained through half the program until he finally locked himself in his room. The friend left hurriedly as soon as she finished and did not look at me or say a single word. It took until after Taurus Man’s heart attack for her to finally come forward and admit why she left so quickly and requested that she never have to come back again. The relative with the curious questions who stayed with us for a week that I mentioned in the last post? By the morning of the third day, she was near tears. Cancer Grump had apparently been interrogating her and quarreling with her every chance he got her alone. Taurus Man had had a serious talk with Cancer Grump before she came over, stating that a relative of mine (we referred to her as my ‘cousin’) was coming over and that Cancer Grump was to leave us alone, especially me with the additional responsibilities on my hands after Taurus Man’s heart attack. Taurus Man laid down the law and said he would not tolerate anymore of Cancer Grump’s bullying me around. So, Cancer Grump had been waiting to get my relative alone to bully her instead. She actually intended to stay longer, but by the end of that third day, was desperately trying to make plans to find somewhere else to stay. The earliest she could leave was a week after she came and she reluctantly stayed until then. I do not want to risk losing the last family support person I have. Taurus Man thinks that if she’s willing, I should let her come and just explain the situation, but I don’t think he understands how troubled these people are by his father’s actions. The most he can do is ask Cancer Grump not to quarrel with someone, and by then, the damage is already done, and Cancer Grump does as he pleases anyway. Most likely, I’m looking at being alone and unsupported with the baby and everything else that will be going on then. The most I can hope for is that Taurus Man is still unemployed (which I shouldn’t hope for) and can help me and act as my line of defense against his dad.

I have done a lot of research on birth over the years, and I had decided on some options I would have liked to have when I was ready to give birth. For this reason, Taurus Man and I were working on a plan. The gist was that we wouldn’t consider kids until we could save up to get out of this house and have a place of our own, where a child could grow up safely and hopefully happily, without fear of abuse or mistreatment. I told Taurus Man we would consider it after 5 years of marriage. I figured with both of us working, we should have a little something to get the ball rolling. With his mother constantly pressuring us for grandchildren and insisting that she would financially support us and the child, Taurus Man and I agreed that even if we were to take her up on her generosity, the earliest we would go was 4 years. According to my plan, 2 years before we were ready, Taurus Man and I would both get into shape and have regular exercise routines. 1 year before we were ready, I would start prenatal yoga and exercises, we would both get check-ups to make sure our health was top-of-the-line, and we would both be eating as healthy as we could and Taurus Man would be on multivitamins while I started pre-natals to see what my body would tolerate and adjust to and whatnot with all my sensitivities to side effects. 6 months before our planned time of conception, we would have enough money to live off of for at least a year in case we needed time off or either of us was too sick to work during my pregnancy and after the baby was born. We would also make sure that we had a list of essential things for the baby covered financially for at least the first year, so once the time was right, it was just to go out and spend money. We would have spoken to our doctors about trying to conceive, make sure they okay-d our health and saw what our options were for proper health care in this country, where my dad is, and where his mom is. We would have chosen the best place with the best options and made sure we had enough money saved to go with that option and support ourselves comfortably. 3 months before trying to conceive, we would have enough money to try egg or sperm donation or IVF if we couldn’t conceive naturally. We would treat ourselves and enjoy our time as a couple to have “that time” before taking the big leap into parenthood, and when we were ready, have as much fun as we could trying to conceive, holding off if it got too stressful, and stopping to get my much-awaited hysterectomy if we had no luck after 3-5 years of trying.

You know how I said I’m like a crap-magnet? I didn’t think that I would become as sickly as an invalid and have to give up my job after being pressured by the very managers that begged me to take the job in the first place. I didn’t see endometriosis being thrown at me. Taurus Man, laid-back, playing-football-three/four-times-a-week-for-fun, healthy as a horse getting a stress related heart attack with an unknown genetic heart problem at the age of freaking 27? Taurus Man’s job refusing to continue letting him work because technically, they didn’t sign the contract yet, so technically they had the right to turn him away without “discrimination” if technically he wasn’t legally their employee yet? Taurus Man’s family unleashing hell on us both and trying to break up our marriage AGAIN? Turning to my family for emotional support to have their figurative doors slammed in my face? Cancer Woman, my wonderfully supportive MIL, withdrawing her love and support to renew her obsession with Cancer Bitch? My depression spiraling out of controlling, reaching out blindly to anyone there for help to find all backs turned, and end up in the hospital after a carefully planned out triply backed up suicide attempt? Cancer Woman insisting to Taurus Man that I didn’t love him if I didn’t want to live and Taurus Man, after his confusion about his love and faith in me when his family intervened with the heart attack, turned on me again to believe her? Trust me, things were not supposed to happen this way. I know, I know, life laughs in the face of plans. But to end up like this? Seriously? What the hell?

When I realized my shrunken boobs were filling back out, my nipples were constantly standing on end and darkening, my typical PMS of wanting to murder Taurus Man was replaced by mushy lovey-dovey-ness and non-stop tears during action movies, I looked at Taurus Man and said one word. “No.”
Taurus Man stared at me for a long time before I spelled it out. “I CANNOT be pregnant.”
Taurus Man stared at me for a long time again. “Are you late?”
“No. I still have a couple weeks. But I feel it. I know. But I can’t be.”
“Let’s wait and see. It might not be. It can’t be. I highly doubt it. When is the last time we…?”
“I can’t remember. But I know my body. This doesn’t happen. This has NEVER happened. I keep thinking I love you so much. At this time of the month, I’m supposed to want to kill you.”
“Oh. I knew something was different! That’s it! You’re not mad at me! Wow. This is weird. You’re always mad at me by now.”
“But I’m not. Why do I want to hug you and cry? This doesn’t happen. Not now. And look.” *pulls off shirt*
“Oh yeahhh.” *cops a feel*
“NO. Wasn’t I complaining that my boobs were shrinking? LOOK. AT. THESE. THINGS.”
“Oh yeahhhh.” *cops a feel*
“You’re an ass. I can’t be pregnant.”
“But you love me. And we’ll wait and see if you’re late. You know you want kids. You’ll be a great mother.”
“Yeah I do. And I want kids, but not now. What will we do? I really think I am.” *starts to cry*
“Nah, you’re worrying too much. Don’t worry until you have something to worry about.”
“You’re not listening!” *throws pillow at his face*
“See, that’s more like it. Get angry. PMS means you’re not pregnant.”
*stare at him for a long time*

I peed on a stick for the first time exactly a week after my missed period. As soon as my urine touched the stick, a thick black line showed up. I ran out of the bathroom pulling up my pants as Taurus Man and I scrutinized the instruction sheet and tried to figure out what it meant. One line was negative, two lines was positive. But the pictures showed the other line showing up as negative, and on the positive result, the other line was thicker and meant positive. We held our breaths and shook the test and waited. “Maybe it’s negative?” I asked sadly.
“I thought we don’t want to be pregnant?” he asked confusedly.
“I know, but it was exciting to think about. But we’re not ready. But it would have been nice. But we’re not ready.”
“WOMAN. You’re confusing.”
The second line had shown up, albeit thin and faint, there were now two lines. Maybe I did the test wrong. I’m not sure how you pee on a stick wrong, but I was sure I did the test wrong. But a stupid smiled crawled on my face and I hugged Taurus Man. “We’re having a baby.” I said.
“I thought you said the paper said the lines have to be the other way?”
“It doesn’t matter. I know I’m pregnant. I told you I was.”

We went to the doctor the next day, I peed on another stick that tested for HCG, and the doctor looked at both his pee stick and mine and confirmed my pregnancy. As soon as I got home, I called my dad, Taurus Man called his mom, and then we called everyone else we could think of. It was either that night or the next morning I put a picture of my pee sticks on facebook and announced it there too.

You might be confused. I didn’t plan to be pregnant and I was hoping I wouldn’t be. We weren’t ready for it. But I’ve wanted kids my entire life. My entire life, every decision I’ve ever made, has been structured around what I will tell my kids one day and what kind of example I want to be for my kids. The endo crushed me. After all of my careful plans, all of my health-nut freak-ness, after barely managing to deal with Taurus Man’s heart attack, you’re telling me I have an incurable problem that will eventually lead to infertility? A problem that leads to most of its sufferers having hysterectomies by the time they are 25(doesn’t matter that I was already planning one)? A problem that may screw up my insides and kill my careful plans for children? A problem that is impossible to track and diagnose by stages unless it’s bad enough to see with the naked eye during surgery? As much as the diagnosis took a weight off my shoulders by explaining why I bled and was in pain every day for months after losing my virginity, and why my periods are so heavy that blood gushes out onto all my clothes, the floor, and my hands, and why I am in constant immobilizing pain and occasionally have a swollen belly and swollen extremities and other symptoms of pregnancy every few months, and why I have menopausal symptoms like hot flashes that get so severe I can’t breathe and eventually pass out, it crushed me harder than everything else Taurus Man and I had faced. My greatest hopes and dreams were planned around, focused on, and were children. So as unprepared as we were for the pregnancy, and even though it came at the worst possible time, I was pregnant. With a child. After finally accepting that I may not be able to have children. BAM. Accidental pregnancy in the middle of WWIII. Life wasn't just laughing in the face of my plans. Life was rolling on the floor, gasping for air, and convulsing from hysterical fits of side-splitting, tear-inducing, lung-popping, screaming laughter.

It was only at today’s OB-GYN appointment that I was finally allowed to ask my doctor about labor. Call me a hippie, but I was hoping for a water birth, for Taurus Man to catch the baby and cut the cord, for the baby to be placed on my chest for skin to skin contact and encouraged to latch on right away, for the baby to be exclusively breast-fed if I was able breast feed easily, for the cord to pulsate before being cut, to stamp the afterbirth, to allow the labor to take its course naturally, to have a birthing mirror, to videotape the birth, etc. NONE of those options are available. In. The. Country. Hospitals country-wide follow a certain protocol to keep things going quickly and to avoid lawsuits. They also bully you and traumatize birthing mothers if you don't like it. No option or say for me. Taurus Man says he understands how I feel but I should just accept it and move on, since we can't do anything about the situation and the end result is a healthy baby. WHAT? Nuh-uh. Oh no he didn’t just say what I think he said to this hormonal mama. I cried the whole way home. I am now sitting with a bottle of Chloraseptic at my side because my throat hurts from talking while crying until he distracted me with food.

This childbirth is special to me. Extremely special. Like rainbows and sparkles and fairies and unicorns kind of special. You’re telling me I’ll be forced to have an enema and possibly Pitocin and/or an epidural and preferably back labor on a hard-ass hospital bed because it’s protocol? That I will have an episiotomy against my will because if the baby doesn't shoot out as soon as he/she is crowning, that means the birth is taking too long? My flesh needs to be sliced the very minute the baby starts making progress out of my womb because of your fucking protocol? After forcing the baby out as quickly as I can (or as quickly as my body can be forced to) according to protocol, my child will be whisked away until you see fit to allow me to bond with my baby? Some unknown type of formula will be shoved in my baby's mouth with no encouragement or effort to help me breastfeed because of fucking protocol? If I do not push when I am told because I am exhausted or scared, you will bully me, quarrel with me, yell in my face, and talk down to me because I'm not following your orders per said timed protocol? If my after birth isn't sliding out of me as soon as the baby is out, you will reach in and yank it out because it will take too long to allow me to deliver it naturally? And then charge me extra for your MANDATORY surgery like performance? Because it makes your job easier Ms. Doctor Lady? Even though I’m paying you $12,000-$13,000 (minimum) to sit there and pull this kid out? You’re going to do the SAME THING the nurses and midwife will do in a public hospital? And I shouldn’t do research or read or ask questions about this stuff? I’m supposed to relax and wait until that day to figure out what’s going on? Because the women who have spoken about having the kind of birth I want, who all EXPERIENCED it and had happy, healthy babies, will mislead me? Because it's a coincidence that the women who have given birth in this country have ALL had episiotomies and left the hospital with at least one "minor" complication? Because spending 5 minutes with my baby after birth is against protocol? I can’t HOLD MY BABY until WHEN? I can’t SEE my baby until WHEN? THE FUCK WOMAN??!?!!?!

So yeah. The second those words came out of Taurus Man’s mouth, the tears started rolling. Typical Taurus Man. But he thinks I’m being unfair and blah blah blah. Readers, we don’t care about anybody else but me today. Today I’ve been devastated. Today we will all sit and crook our heads to the side and go “awww you poor thing”. I told Taurus Man this is why I didn’t want to have a baby in this STUPID country and I had made all my plans in the first place. I know there’s nothing we can do but go with it. But did you hear me? Today, we will crook our heads to the side and say “awwwwww, you poor thing.” It’s about ME and what I wanted right now. Sure, a lot of the babies born in this country are born this way and are healthy. Not good enough. This country has an extremely high infant/newborn mortality rate and post-partum complications record for all of their fancy advancements (this protocol has probably been in effect since the 80's or before). Countries like the US, Australia, South Africa, Europe, and parts of South America have these options available. Are you saying this third-world country is more advanced than them? So advanced, that every time the public questions the mortality rate or a woman tries to sue for what she believes is mistreatment, or a family tries to sue for the death of a laboring woman or newborn baby, the government covers it up while doctors and nurses alike go on strike as they play the blame game until the public forgets about their cause and allows them to pretend it never happened? So advanced, that THIS is what they do, and stick to the same medieval protocols to get the same results (death, complications, etc) instead of reviewing their protocols to leave room for advances in medicine and scientific research? Give me my time to mourn the death of my right to choose and have options and have a say. Now, repeat after me. “Awww, you poor thing!” Very good. Carry on.

Taurus Man is also under the impression that the baby will DIE if he/she is around animals like Hyper Doggy and/or the kittens. Okay, okay. He didn’t say die. He said get sick. Same thing. Anyway, he wants them all out of the room before the baby comes. The fuck did you say bitch? Nuh-uh. Not my babies. But Taurus Man is Taurus Man, and when it comes to things like this, I can whine and protest all I want, but he will get his way. My arguments that hurt my throat more? Grizzly and O’Malley, our first fur babies, were sent to live downstairs. From the garage to a kennel to the back and side of the house, Taurus Man insisted that they would be happy roaming free and playing in the grass. The bitch used PETA quotes to get to me (I’m an avid PETA supporter). Bitch. But I said okay, they did look happier playing and rolling in the grass. What happened? Cancer Grump gave them away to some stranger. Without a word to us. My babies, GONE. Taken by some animal eating, organ selling, abusive CANNIBAL. Taurus Man said I have an active imagination and the guy might be an animal lover and blah blah blah. We don’t care. My sweet canine babies were gone. Stig was the best cat I ever had. He had to go outside because he was greedy. He’s an ANIMAL. Duh. But he’s greedy so he has to leave. Blah blah blah. Less than a month after being outside, he disappeared and we never saw him again. The most human-like, loving, and affectionate cat that ever existed, gone, possibly kidnapped by a cat eating psycho or killed somewhere deep in the bushes. My loving, nose-kissing, face-hugging baby was gone. Jolie was a cute little kitten. Taurus Man was the one that took her in without telling me anything. But she meowed funny and he got a funny vibe and he thought she might be possessed or have some deep rooted problem and he was afraid of her. As quickly as we got her, she was gone, and never heard from again. My sweet, scared little baby was gone. Kitty got curious. She tried to jump out the window numerous times and succeeded numerous times. She brought fleas inside every time she escaped and broke Taurus Man’s internet antenna thingamajig. She had to go outside. She was actually living quite comfortably on the steps and hunted in the grass next to the house and made a few friends. But she was hit by a car just recently and died. Sweet Mama Kitty that just had babies, only wanted love and freedom, gone. Schizo cat is just scary and I stay away from her. I do not mix matters with that she-demon. I see her on one side of the step, I carefully go down the other. Her previous owner encouraged her to scrape and bite and possibly overdosed her on catnip. Not her fault, I know. But she is one scary psycho-cat. She, ironically, the one that I stay away from and cannot bond with, is still here, chilling out in the garage. Any animal that leaves this room is either killed or kidnapped or eaten or somehow or the other GONE. We cannot have outdoor animals roaming free in the grass. They ALL disappear. Hyper Doggy is my favorite and she has to go too? To that place of no return? Nuh-uh. The kittens have just lost their mama and they have to go too? Sigh. I know Taurus Man will get his way and he means well, but today, he’s the bad guy, and we’re all going to feel sorry for me. In unison now, “Awww, you poor thing.” Thank you. He’s all Hyper Doggy will be happier and she can run around more and have more space and get fresh air. Yeah. I’ve heard that before. And then Grizzly and O’Malley were GONE. Plus, Cancer Grump has a habit of leaving the house, garage included, wide open when he leaves to go somewhere. Who’s to say someone won’t see my pretty doggy and steal her? Do you know what criminals do in this country when they want to rob a house and there’s a dog in front of the house? They CHOP THE DOG TO DEATH. Cancer grump ALWAYS leaves the garage open. There was even an instance where a man threatened to come after me when I was home alone and tried to come through the garage but couldn’t figure out how to unhook the hook on the inside of the garage door to open it. And I’m supposed to slap a smile on my face and let my baby girl go down there? Nuh-uh bitch. Nuh-uh. I told Taurus Man that after this, I don’t want any more animals or babies. I can’t take losing anybody else or watching anybody else suffer under Cancer Grump’s wrath.

I haven’t done any real cleaning since I was hospitalized in June. I was ill and soon after we found out I was pregnant. Then the pregnancy symptoms from hell took over. Taurus Man told me not to worry about cleaning. Everything has been standstill since. All of the dishes in the kitchen are dirty. I have a hundred loads of laundry to do.

Before Taurus Man cleared the cobwebs the other day, this place looked like a haunted house. There is A LOT to be done. As much as Taurus Man will tell me not to worry, it’s now December, and there is still A LOT to do. I need all of this stuff taken care of before the baby comes and I still need to plan out what kind of meals I’ll be cooking and freezing before the baby comes.

Cancer Woman has insisted on sending down some baby clothes, supplies, and maternity clothes. We have no say in whatever it is, we don’t know what it is, but we are grateful. There has been no mention of when she will start shopping to send these things, but we will need to go to the other side of the country to clear customs once everything is shipped. Hopefully it will not be too close to the due date or when we bring the baby home so that I'm not waddling around with a dropped baby awaiting labor or a newborn baby and post-partum me trying not to faint in the unsanitary over-heated warehouses these places are headquartered in. HOPEFULLY.

There is A LOT to do and not much time. My pretty spreadsheet gave me the luxury of doing one thing a day, but did not take into account my palpitations, fainting, or constant bouts of weakness. The only exercise my doctor wants me to do is 15 minutes of walking in the morning and night with at least an hour’s sleep during the day. I am not allowed to do anything more. I am not allowed to lift or move more than 10 pounds of anything. I’m starting to not like this doctor. I don’t think she understands what I mean by “I have A LOT to do.” That also means that aside from Taurus Man, who comes home from every other football game with an injury (currently, a dislocated thumb and sprained ankle) I have NO help to do all of these "lots of things". That spreadsheet doesn’t even cover everything. My third trimester starts this month. Half of that list isn’t done yet. I hate the world today. I really, really do. All together now, “awww you poor thing!” Great job guys. Great job.

Preggo Cat Gives Birth!

**Warning: may contain graphic images**
Preggo cat's real name is Kitty, ingeniously given to her by Taurus man when we first adopted her as a 1 month old stray. She has always been fiercely independent and is one of those cats that will accept praise when she feels like it, and show affection when she feels like it. We're guessing she must have been born around late June 2010. She does not like being kept indoors at all, and after too many escape attempts that included several jumps out of our three story high bedroom window, we agreed to let her be free where she was comfortable. She still technically lives with us though, as she has made her home on the steps by the front door leading to the garage, the steps by the unusable back door also leading to the garage, the front porch, the roof hanging below the front porch, the garage, and Cancer Grump's wood workshop downstairs. Anywho, we realized she was pregnant shortly after hubby's heart attack in April, and on May 30 she delivered 4 premie babies. Three were stillborn, but one was born a pale blue, yet breathing. She rejected all the babies and proceeded to eat them (totally normal I later learned) so I took the last kitten upstairs and followed all the instructions I could find online about premie kittens 11 o'clock in the night until he/she finally died in my arms. I don't think Kitty really knew what to do with herself pregnant. She was very reckless and tried going about her business as she normally would, but when her belly got in the way and she fell over, she would look around completely confused, and just try whatever she was doing again. She just got up and kept on going after losing her babies, but I was devastated for her. I did even more research and promised to be better prepared if she got pregnant again.

This time, we noticed she was pregnant either in August or September (it feels like forever), when my morning sickness was being a total bitch and I was constantly sick. We waited and waited and waited. And waited. Finally, around 3AM on November 9th, Taurus man insisted that I get dressed and go with him to drive around looking for somewhere that would be open for him to get something to eat. Standing by the car, I shushed him and told him to listen. Yes, I was hearing little squeaks! "Do we have kitties?" I excitedly asked.

Taurus man put on the flashlight on his fancy phone and pointed it in every direction as we tried to figure out where the noise was coming from. He instructed me to wait by the steps as he headed down the deep flight of stairs with one banister leading into the basement/wood-workshop. Halfway down he turned around and grinned "Yes, we do have kittens."

I squealed and carefully made my way down as he guided me with the light (because like in my last post as you know, I'm so delicate and fragile *rolls eyes*) We climbed into an area right below the water tanks and found Kitty lying on her side on the concrete, covered in dust, mud, and dirt, and moaning, with one black kitten searching for a nipple. She was still in the process of birthing a kitten. I heard the squeals again and we found a second black kitten had wriggled himself about three feet away.

I sent Taurus Man upstairs for the tub with newspapers and an old towel I had put together half-assedly just for this moment and used the dim light of my crappy old phone (which is much easier to understand than Taurus man's newfangled technological devices) to talk to Kitty. I had read about some laboring cats not wanting to be disturbed, and others becoming very aggressive. I wasn't sure how Kitty felt so I stayed back and talked to her to play it safe. She reached out both paws and moaned softly so I touched her paws first, and as she closed her paws around my fingers, I reached out to stroke her face. She purred happily, so I rearranged myself to pet her and talk to her soothingly for as long as it took.

Thankfully, Taurus Man returned quickly with the tub and a pillowcase for me to use to pick up the stranded black kitten. It is common knowledge that touching newborn kittens can alter the scent the mother cat will pick up from them and she may reject them or eat them, so I didn't want to touch them. I pushed my hand in the pillowcase and petted Kitty for awhile, to get her scent on it, and then picked up the stranded black kitten and guided him to a nipple.

Kitty continued moaning and crying and Taurus Man quickly realized that the kitten she was birthing was not moving and was coming out feet first. As I looked closely, I realized the kitten was still in its sac and was already turning blue, with its head stuck in the birth canal. Taurus Man quickly suggested that I help Kitty through the birth if the kitten had any chance of survival, and helped me position myself to assist Kitty.

Before I continue, I just want to state that I although I saw my first birthing video at the age of 5 and continue to watch them in my spare time, I had never witnessed a live birth in person, whether human or animal. I had done extensive research on cat labor so I wouldn't be completely clueless, but all the sites I checked insisted that Kitty would instinctively know what to do and if there were any complications, the sites insisted that I would psychically predict that and already be at the vet's office. Vet visits in this crappy ass third-world country run into hundreds of dollars, plus vaccinations and emergency treatments turn costs into thousands of dollars. The majority of vets never have the medication or vaccinations they need on hand. There's a better chance driving for two and a half hours to get to the other side of the country (aka the rich people area) and paying three times the price to get the kind of vet people in the States take for granted. And at three in the morning, we would have more luck finding Bigfoot than getting a vet to help us. So, even though I've seen tons of videos and read tons of books, on the inside I was beyond paralyzed with fear.

So I petted Kitty, talked soothingly to her, put my brave I-totally-know-what-I'm-doing face on, and placed one hand on Kitty's tummy, and the other hand under the blue kitten. Pressing gently on her tummy, I glided my hand downwards and with every "unh" moan from her, I slowly pulled the kitten out until the head was out and I left it up to Kitty to push out the placenta. As soon as the head was out, Kitty reached for my hands and purred again, and promptly fell asleep.

It is common knowledge that male cats attack and kill kittens, especially the males, viewing them as a threat. As the first two kittens seemed black, we guessed that a local black cat with white feet was the father. As he has a history for attacking Kitty, despite reading that laboring cats should not be moved, we decided that neither Kitty nor her babies would be safe, especially in the condition of her birthing environment and vulnerability it left them. Using the pillowcase and the guidance of Taurus Man's light, I first picked up the black kittens, one by one, and then Kitty and the third kitten together and placed them all in the tub. Taurus Man picked up the tub and handed me the light as I guided us back upstairs.

Once we were under the proper light upstairs, we saw that the third kitten had orange striped fur and his face and paws were completely blue. Kitty had pushed out his placenta and was almost through birthing the fourth kitten, also orange. Taurus Man suggested that I burst the sac myself and start cleaning the stillborn baby. I ripped off a piece of the sash on my bathrobe and dipped it in warm water (the material and water is supposed to mimic the mother's tongue), pinching the sac as Taurus Man burst it with a fork and I continued cleaning the baby in the opposite direction of fur growth as I had read, hoping the rubbing would stimulate the baby. By this time, the fourth kitten was completely out and Kitty was already pushing out a fifth orange kitten on top of the fourth. Taurus Man took over with the third kitten and started rubbing his back as I burst the sac on the fourth kitten and started cleaning him, then placed him by a nipple and waited for Kitty to take over. The fifth kitten came out just as quickly as the fourth and his sac was already broken. Kitty tried to sit up to reach him and fell back down panting. I picked up the fifth kitten with the same sash and placed him near a nipple, within Kitty's reach.

Like a pro, Kitty's instincts told her what to do. Between occasional naps and panting, she finished cleaning all five kittens and ate all the placentas. We could not revive the stillborn kitten unfortunately, and even Kitty's instincts couldn't help. Once the remaining four kittens had nursed/were latched on, and Kitty seemed to be at ease, we moved the tub from the hall/living room table to our bedroom. I waited a few hours afterwards and then changed the bloody bedding to clean towels. Kitty seemed to be okay other than being exhausted and overheated. She licked herself clean and was on her feet by morning (I say morning as in daylight here).

Kitty seemed to thrive from attention and began acting a bit baby-ish herself, stretching out her paws to play with my face or rolling from side to side and smiling as I rubbed her tummy or sides. She can't get enough attention. She's a total diva and she definitely deserves to be. By the second day, one of the orange kittens had crawled along the bedding and pulled himself to the edge, almost falling over. I caught him and placed him near Kitty and then started panicking because I touched the newborn kitten. I had to wait a few hours for the internet to start working (in this country, rain and internet cannot exist at the same time) and googled "touching newborn kittens" (or something to that effect). I read about 20-30 pages before Taurus Man assured me it was not the end of the world. Kitty was nursing all of her babies and had showed no signs of rejecting them. There were sites that encouraged touching the kittens as soon as they were born, and others suggesting waiting three weeks. Everyone has their own opinion, and I respect that. Taurus Man picked up one of the kittens and cuddled him as Kitty looked on. She meowed a bit, but didn't fuss otherwise. He encouraged me to pick up one as well and when I did (my hormones have subjected me to peer pressure THAT easily), Kitty reacted the same way. I held my kitten for a bit longer and eventually, Kitty got up and came over to meow in my face in a very that's-my-baby-not-yours kind of way. I quickly put down the kitten and moved the tub to the ground next to a nightstand to give them some space.

Yesterday, there was an infestation of red biting ants in the room and when I looked at the tub, I saw it was 3/4 filled with ants. I have seen a kitten being eaten by ants before, so I picked up and dusted off each kitten before doing the same to Kitty, and blocked off a little area in the bed to keep them with me. They stayed with me for the two-three hours Taurus Man left to play football and I got no aggression from Kitty. The kittens were three days old and crawling already, and figured out how to crawl up and over the bedding, so I moved them back to the center or brought them to snuggle up to me or Kitty and Kitty was fine with that. I've noticed that Kitty is more comfortable with me handling the kittens than Taurus Man, yet she prefers Taurus Man's attention on her over mine. Seriously speaking, she will drop whatever she's doing, including nursing her babies, and run over to Taurus Man every time he enters the room to be petted.

All the kitties and I drifted in and out of sleep until Taurus Man came home. I insisted on leaving them there with me and at some point in time, Taurus Man fixed the ants problem, moved the kitties, and either moved me or convinced me to rotate myself from my upside down position in bed. All I know is, I woke up at 3AM feeling like I was on another planet with all the kitties sleeping in their tub next to the nightstand, and me lying down right-side up next to sleeping hubby. I have no idea when I went to sleep or how I had slept through so much of the day and night. I brought the kitties back on the bed and Mama Kitty happily thrived under my affection and at some point, we all fell asleep again. Seriously you guys, I may never need sleeping pills or antidepressants again.

The kittens are now four days old, crawling, wriggling, and squeaking like pros, and Kitty is the proudest, most efficient mama I've ever seen. We're sure the black male cat with white feet is the father of the first two black kittens. One of the kittens resembles Kitty with her spots of color and has the most beautiful mark on his forehead. The other is black with white feet like his dad, and also has a white underbelly. The other two kittens (and the one that didn't make it) are all orange-stripey with white effects here and there so I suspect the neighbor's orange-striped and white cat (Kitty's favorite playmate) of being their father, since cats can be fertilized by more than one partner.

Everyone seems to be doing great and I'm swollen with pride every time Kitty does something mama-like. I, however, am so drowsy I might fall over the side of the bed if I don't lie down soon. With that said, good night, and hear are some kitty pics:
